City of Gold -Pierre Berton - 1957

This classic short film from Pierre Berton depicts the Klondike gold rush at its peak, when would-be prospectors struggled through harsh conditions to reach the fabled gold fields over 3000 km north of civilization. Using a collection of still photographs, the film juxtaposes the Dawson City at the height of the gold rush with its bustling taverns and dance halls with the more tranquil Dawson City of the present.

SUMMARY
Dud wants to buy his girlfriend Maime an ice cream cone so he breaks open his mother's bank, and splits their last dime in half in the process. His mother punishes him so he runs away. Dud is scared by imaginary ghosts in the dark, so he runs back home where he gets a spanking from his mother.

These two variants of Wallace Carlsons "Dreamy Dud," a boy with an overactive fantasy life and a down-to-earth dog, reveal how animation history does not always parallel artistic progress. The 1915 film from the Essanay Studio has a simpler line-drawing method but a sharper wit, and is indebted in style and content to Winsor McCays dreamy hero, "Little Nemo." The later version, from Carlsons 1919-20 Us Fellers series, is more complicated but less comic, relying on the elaborate backgrounds available through the Bray Studios patents.

2005 OSCARS for Best Short Animation

Ryan is based on the life of Ryan Larkin, a Canadian animator who, 30 years ago, produced some of the most influential animated films of his time. In the film, we hear the voices of prominent animators and artists discussing Ryan's work, and from waitresses, mission-house caretakers and homeless people who make up Ryan's life. These voices speak through strange, twisted, and disembodied, computer-generated characters--which combine to reflect the film's creator, Chris Landreth. In the words of Anais Nin, "We don't see things as they are. We see things as we are."

Some strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.

Since Jim Thurman has recently passed away, I'm presenting one of his little known works: an animated adaptation of a Harry Allard/James Marshall book, "It's So Nice to Have a Wolf Around the House."

This film was made by the creative team who worked on several neat cartoons for Sesame Street, including the popular "Teeny Little Super Guy" series. Paul Fierlinger designed, directed and co-scripted the film, Thurman also scripted and supplied voices, and Larry Gold did the music.

Rest in peace, Jim. You rocked our world.

The Hole is a 1962 short animation by John Hubley and Faith Hubley that won an Academy Award for Short Subjects (Cartoons) in 1962.

The film uses improvised dialogue from Dizzy Gillespie and George Mathews as two construction workers at work in the bottom of a hole on a construction site discussing the possibility of an accidental nuclear weapons attack.

Carrying on the tradition of Disney corporate educational films, was the Bell Science Series, produced by Jack Warner for Bell Telephone. With several of the episodes written and directed by Frank Capra, and animation direction by such notable artists as Chuck Jones, Fritz Freleng and Shamus Culhane, the series attempted to explain scientific phenomena such as the nature of time (about time (1959)), the functioning of the human body (Hemo the magnificent, 1958), the importance of heredity and environment in determining human traits (the Thread of Life, 1957), and the mysteries of the universe (The Strange Case of Cosmic Rays. 1957), among others.

Battle 360°, also written as Battle 360, is an American documentary television series that originally aired from February 29 to May 2, 2008 on History. The program focuses on the World War II-era aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The show is produced by Flight 33 Productions.[1]

Battle 360° makes extensive use of computer animation to depict the story of the Enterprise. The animation is combined with documentary footage, interviews of Enterprise crew members and military historians, and voice-over narration.

The series is written by Tony Long and Samuel K. Dolan, and produced by Brian Thompson, Samuel K. Dolan and Tim Evans. It is narrated by Wally Kurth. Military historians providing commentary include Alan Pietruszewski, William Bodette,[2] Martin K. A. Morgan, Jonathan Parshall, and producer and story editor Samuel K. Dolan. The 3D graphics are by Crazybridge Studios, with additional graphics by Radical 3D; the visual effects supervisor is Steffen Schlachtenhaufen. The executive producers are Louis C. Tarantino and Douglas J. Cohen, and the associate producer is Ryan Hurst.

On February 29, 2008, the first episode of Battle 360° had 1.8 million viewers. This was the second best viewer total for a History channel series premiere, behind Ice Road Truckers.[3][4]

The series original run was broadcast with limited commercial interruptions because of its sponsorship by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, whose founder, Jack Taylor, served on the Enterprise as a pilot during World War II.

Patton 360°, a spin-off series of Battle 360°, premiered on April 10, 2009 on the same channel.[5]
